December and the PSYCHOLOGY OF MUSIC!

Postby Paul Dobransky MD » Mon Nov 16, 2009 1:50 pm

I want to try something different for the membership for December: both covering the parts of the psyche, alongside the PSYCHOLOGICAL POWER OF MUSIC in dating, relationships, career and personal growth!

I'm open to your suggestions, tracks, mp3s that you want me to highlight and provide for study - from any area - Jazz, Pop, Club, R&B, classical, world, alt, and whatever inspires you!

Maybe we might cover how different types of music are appropriate as different tactics at different stages of the Omega.

Yea to tie it to the Omega steps would be great. How does one cultivate mystery in music for example?

And also how (if?) different personality styles tend to like certain kinds of music.

GWAR!! Love it! But we can't talk about spraying a speed metal audience with goat semen and blood, sorry.

But I am curious about music choices in the kwml types, attraction and friendship, what music says about personality and maturity.

Does jazz = lover, metal = warrior, alt rock, house, trance and triphop = magician, rock, classic = queen or king?

What does hiphop and r and b equal?

I really love the more recent music from John Mayer. I believe he´s a Lover, alot into his head always expressing his feelings about love and stuff. One of my absolute favorite songs from him and in general is called Belief from the album Continuum. The song called All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye from his just released album Battle Studies is also totally awesome! Feel free to check those out.

I don´t have access to YouTube here to give you a link, since The Great Fire Wall of China is stopping me. Same with Facebook and Blogs. F***

Great thread!! Love it!

I like listening to Rock but I'm really attracted and intrigued by Hip Hop.

Hip Hop is all over the map though and has multiple genres that would fit most KWML types I think. The majority being Lovers and Warriors.
The De La Soul, Talib Qweli peace and harmony guys and the Sports and Crime/Business CEO associated Jay-Z, Mobb Deep...etc.

Public Enemy:
Chuck D - King,
Flava Flav - Magician,
Terminator X - Warrior.

Not famed for their Love.

Recently I have been listening to ON CALL from the KINGS OF LEON album BECAUSE OF THE TIMES.
It has a powerful effect on me. It puts me in a really motivated frame of mind.

It also comes straight after a belter on the album called CHARMER which is also worth checking out on this forum, seemingly about a siren type woman. "She's always LOOKING at me!"

Thank you guys for specific song suggestions that seem kingly, warriorly, magicianly, loverly, and send song titles that relate to boundaries, beliefs, confidence, wellbeing, education, experience, intellect, success, wisdom, shrewdness, intuition, decisions, and storytelling! Keep em coming!

Country+Western has a rather broad spectrum of styles that would translate into K/QWML. I'm actually not a C+W follower, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

In terms of songs that relate to psychology; a current up-and-coming singer/songwriter is Melody Gardot. She's got a rich voice that's rather like a mix between k.d. Lang, Patsy Cline, and Doris Day (I know, I know, you young guys won't know who Doris Day is... sux to be old). Anyway, her songs are intensely Lover-type. Interesting talent note: she sings french fluently. Gorgeous. A particularly lovely song of hers is "Who Will Comfort Me." Her song in french is "Les etoiles." Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous.

Little tip for the guys, any female singer who can sing in french will knock a woman's socks off. Says you're wicked smart and mysterious, yet tender. Oooh, I'm melting as I write this...and, as many of you guys here know how much of a hardass I am, something that makes ME melt is probably worth looking into. I'm just saying.

Perhaps the way each type listens to music says more about them?

I'm a Magician/Warrior, when I hear good music, I can't help but move SOMETHING to the beat (or rhythm). My head will nod, feet tap, whatever.

This may be more of a lover quality but when I am listening carefully to new music (something I haven't heard before), I tune out everything except the music and kind of let the music wash over me and take it in. When there is a really good lyric or key change, I'll usually smile in a way that would say to another person "I see what you did there and it was awesome"

Wow, that was a lot more out there and woo-woo than I expected.

Yeah man, John Mayer is incredible. He's kind of a Lover/Magician though - he had a show on VH1 called "John Mayer Has a TV Show?" and he has a very active, very dry, tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. I also saw a video of him recording with Kanye West, and you would think that Kanye would be talking and making a fool out of himself, but instead John kind of took control of the whole situation. At the end John was comparing his extremely expensive watch to Kanye's less expensive gold chain and said "That's right, go listen to 'Daughters' again, bitches." Too bad you can't youtube it.

I also sing and play guitar for a local band. It's alternative rock type stuff.

I think Magicians like Glam Rock.

Tom Waits is a Magician.

I went to a festival called The Green Man once in England. It was an alt folk/country affair. Pretty organic - lots of beards.

It was miserable.

I also think Prince is a tiny wee Magician.

That's funny! Well, with Taylor Swift being so popular, there'll probably be more crossover fans.
