I feel like the music I originally liked as a kid goes more with what one would at first link to my KWML personality. As a King, I grew up liking more conservative stuff. Classical even. Toned down stuff.

But as I've grown older, I like hip hop and Techno a lot more. I think it's b/c opposites attract.
Songs about rockstars and gangsters and "Living the Goodlife" draw me because they make me live that dream while I'm listening to the song...just the way I'm attracted to Magicians...

Don't know if it would work the opposite way. Maybe Magicians would have more curiosity about Classical because they don't know much about it and how to listen to it b/c grew up with the more crazy type music that was like their personality?

Personally I have always found that music has a massive impact on my inner state, it can change my emotions and state of mind more quickly than anything else on earth.

Needless to say - looking forward to these discussions

Wow, that was a lot more out there and woo-woo than I expected.

Actually I think that is a more fruitful direction than "genre x = personality y"---which strikes me as a misrepresentation of the purpose of Art. I would venture that it is much more about how the specific individual reacts to music than the music they react to.

However, if pushed, [speaking with my classical composer hat on] one clear example of "types" is Holst's "The Planets" which has all of the KWML types in one package.

Music impacts our emotions, we can effectively change our mood by playing / listening to music.

But I suspect we can also share the mental state of the performers and not only the emotions. Kind of like the mirror neurons, through vibrations.

When you play an instrument you use it as an interphase between yourself and the audience. Translating IDEAS and EMOTIONAL ENERGY into patterns of sound.

The interphase between those IDEAS and EMOTIONS and the instrument itself is the BODY. By being absorbed into the music we can "mirror" the brain waves AND the physical state of tension / relaxation of the performer.

Just something I've thought about for a while.

I recently read an article which explains how music may have predated language. The oldest found instrument is a flute dated 43,100 BCE which was found in the Divje Babe cave in Slovenia which can play the diatonic scale.which means we have been rocking out since we where neanderthals. does anyone have any thoughts on how this could have effected our evolution? .

Hard to say, really. It could be that humans have been musical since as far back as the stone age, but we simply haven't found any evidence.

I pretty much did the same. Listened to easy rock, the Beatles, and classical as a pre-teen then learned about rock from my teen friends and later explored jazz and followed rap & hip-hop in the late 80s early 90s. Learned about hard-core rap from an ex-bf (white guy) at the turn of the century and started learning about modern electronica-dance about three years ago. Now, I'm re-visiting rock and discovering I have to backtrack to the late 80s to follow modern rock influences. It's looking like a big research project because there are a lot of branches.

I think we tend to seek balance, so I expect that by the time we're into our twilight years, we'll have explored many genres.
